Birmingham were playing in the third tier of English football for the first time in 30 years, but after spending a reported total of around £24 million during the course of the summer transfer window, including £15 million on Fulham striker Jay Stansfield, they were the dominant force in the division this season.

The Blues won the League One title with a remarkable total of 111 points, which set a new EFL record, but getting back to the Championship is far from the extent of the club's ambitions, with chairman Tom Wagner promising supporters last month during the promotion celebrations that there is plenty more to come.

Having signed a pre-contract deal with the club in January, Hannover 96 defender Phil Neumann will join up with his new team-mates this summer, but he will certainly not be Birmingham's only new arrival, and, according to Sky Sports, the Midlands outfit and fellow newly-promoted side Wrexham "are likely to be among the biggest spenders outside the Premier League" during the upcoming window.

As excitement builds about potential activity at St Andrew's @ Knighthead Park, we rounded up all the latest Blues transfer news.

Birmingham City battle Wrexham for Harry Darling

Birmingham were first linked with a move for Swansea City defender Harry Darling in January, and it seems they have reignited their interest in him this summer.

Darling scored five goals and provided three assists in 39 appearances for the Swans this season, but despite being offered an improved contract by the Welsh side, he is yet to commit his future to the club, meaning he could be set to leave on a free transfer.

According to journalist Alan Nixon, Birmingham are keen to bring Darling to St Andrew's @ Knighthead Park, but they face competition for the ball-playing defender's signature from Wrexham.

Blackburn Rovers facing Dion Sanderson transfer dilemma

Defender Dion Sanderson was Birmingham's captain during their relegation season last term, but he fell out of favour in League One, making just seven appearances in the first half of the campaign.

Given his lack of game time, it was little surprise when Sanderson was allowed to join Blackburn Rovers on loan in January, and the move briefly saw him reunite with ex-Blues manager John Eustace, who was in charge at Ewood Park at the time before departing for Derby County the following month.

With Scott Wharton expected to miss the start of next season through injury, Blackburn may decide to go through with a move for Sanderson, but they are also hoping to tie Danny Batth down to a new contract, and that could have an impact on the situation.

Update provided on potential Birmingham City, Che Adams reunion

Football Insider reported last month that Birmingham were preparing to offer Torino striker Che Adams "a big-money, blockbuster contract" to convince him to return to the club this summer.

Adams first joined the Blues in the summer of 2016 for a fee of around £2 million, and he scored 38 goals in 123 appearances during a three-year spell at St Andrew's @ Knighthead Park before making the move to Southampton for £15 million.

The 28-year-old then spent the next five years with the Saints before completing the switch to Italy on a free transfer last summer, and he has scored 10 goals and provided four assists in 36 games for Torino this season.

Talk about a possible reunion with Birmingham had gathered pace in recent weeks, but Birmingham Live poured cold water on the speculation over the weekend, claiming that Adams is not on the club's list of summer targets.
