Brighton & Hove Albion head coach Dario Vidošić said that his side need to be braver with the ball after they slipped to a 4-0 defeat to Arsenal in the Subway Women’s League Cup quarter-finals at Broadfield Stadium last night.

The Seagulls held Arsenal for 65 minutes before crumbling to what turned out to be a heavy loss.

When speaking to the media after the match, Brighton & Hove Albion boss Vidošić said that there were some aspects of his side’s performance that were pleasing but identified areas for improvement.

“Without the ball, happy for 60-65 minutes,” Vidošić said. “I thought, especially in the first half, we were well-organised, made it difficult for them, we defended everything quite well.

“We probably gave Alessia [Russo] one chance with that header. She got a good move and then we just got caught a little bit and allowed her to make that move, so that’s something we will get better at.

“I thought, again, with the ball, we were getting a little bit timid, a little bit hesitant. We played straight into their pressing traps, so it was just a little bit of confidence with the ball that’s lacking at the moment and then obviously, with the first goal, just the timing.

“Arsenal are the type of team, we’ve experienced it twice now, that once they score the first, they get their momentum, they get going, they get more confidence and the game can quickly get away from you.

“I think with the ball, a lot to improve and without the ball for 60-65 minutes, it was very good. Once the result got away from us, we just got it, we were all kind of discounted all over the place but plenty to fix, we come back to that.”

One positive was the excellent home support that Brighton & Hove Albion received, something which Vidošić appreciated.

He said “They’ve been terrific for us. They were vocal, they were helping us, they were trying to push us and give us that energy.

“I think we’ve done well bar a couple games, so it’s just now how do we quickly rediscover that sort of form, the way we play and that confidence. We need their support throughout the season and hopefully, they keep building, keep coming.

“We’ve lost our undefeated record now at home but I think we’ve done some good things. They want to just keep building, trying to improve, put in a good show and win games.

“We’ve just got to keep working and try to play ourselves, maybe simplify things a little bit more. We just need to try to be better, try to maybe think a bit more of what our roles are going into games.”

Brighton & Hove Albion return to Barclays Women’s Super League action on Sunday when they travel to Manchester United.
