Calvarese criticises Inzaghi for pushing referee to break rules in Inter-Milan

The former referee Gianpaolo Calvarese has criticised Daniele Doveri’s decision to scrap the added time in AC Milan’s game against Inter, following heavy complaints by Simone Inzaghi.
It was in the dying moments of Inter-Milan, with the Rossoneri up 3-0, that Inzaghi told the fourth official that he didn’t want any added time. The Nerazzurri manager was furious as the fourth official prepared the sign but in the end, he got his wish.
Speaking to Radio Kiss Kiss about the incident, as cited by MilanNews, the former referee and current expert Gianpaolo Calvarese criticised Inzaghi and the referee Daniele Doveri. As he explained, the latter ended up breaking the rules.
“Inzaghi’s protests? The rules say that added time can only be extended, not shortened. When I officiated games with scorelines of 5-1 or so, some coaches asked me to whistle at the 90th minute and I couldn’t,” he stated.
It’s a bit of a grey zone, however, as no added time was shown by the fourth official in the end. But the fact that the sign was prepared, and that Doveri established that added time was appropriate, means the referee went back on his decision just because of the manager’s shouting.
The journalist Carlos Passerini even suggested that Inzaghi should have been sent off for his behaviour, clearly trying to influence the game in a way that isn’t allowed.
