Football League World looks at three potential suitors for Cardiff City playmaker Rubin Colwill, who has reported Championship interest
Rubin Colwill is the latest Cardiff City player to earn interest elsewhere following the club's relegation to League One, which was confirmed on the penultimate weekend of the season at home to West Bromwich Albion.
According to a recent update from reporter Pete O'Rourke, a number of unnamed Championship clubs have expressed an interest and are "actively" trying to find out Cardiff's valuation of Colwill ahead of a potential bidding war this summer.
Colwill, who is under contract in the Welsh capital until 2027, has made 156 appearances for his boyhood club overall after debuting back in 2021, and 48 of those came across all competitions in the 2024/25 campaign as he registered five goals and four assists overall.
The 23-year-old divides opinion among the Bluebirds faithful, but those in his corner - of which there are plenty - will have no surprise at interest emerging in his signature. Colwill, perhaps testament to his ability and eye for the spectacular, is known across the Championship too, and many supporters of many different clubs will be wanting their side to pursue a move for the mercurial playmaker in the coming weeks and months.
But what clubs could best fit the bill for Colwill if he decides to leave the now-League One side? Football League World takes a look at three potential destinations...
A natural selection given the reported interest last summer, Ipswich Town were previously linked with Colwill ahead of their unsuccessful Premier League campaign.
The Tractor Boys, of course, have since returned to the Championship in swift fashion, and that could open the door for a renewal of their reported interest in Colwill.
Under Kieran McKenna, Ipswich like to deploy a traditional 'number 10' behind the striker and that fits Colwill to a tee. He would face stiff competition from Conor Chaplin and Omari Hutchinson, but the latter is reported to have a £35 million relegation release clause in his contract and could leave Portman Road this summer.
Colwill would potentially struggle, at least initially, to gain the consistent weekly starting berth many Cardiff fans believe he is in need of in order to unleash and unlock his enormous potential.
However, the presence of McKenna - an intricate and progressive young head coach with an esteemed track record for developing and maximising talent - could also hand Colwill the ideal mentorship and environment to push him to that next level.
As far as Ipswich fans are concerned, any potential acquisition of Colwill perhaps would not represent the blockbuster statement of intent of their ambitions of going straight back up to the Premier League.
However, he possesses the natural ability, X-Factor and potential to shine for just about any team at Championship level, and could be an extremely savvy long-term investment for a club always looking ahead to the future.
Another club who could feasibly express an interest in Colwill is Sunderland, who have implemented a devoted recruitment philosophy centred around recruiting young, high-potential talent in recent years.
The Black Cats have had the Championship's youngest squad by measure of average age since their promotion back to the second-tier in 2022, securing two separate play-off finishes in that time. The outcome of this season's promotion bid under Regis Le Bris, set to be determined either against Coventry City in the semi-finals or on Wembley Way later this month, will undoubtedly dictate the feasibility of any potential pursuit of Colwill.
Should another campaign in the Championship await on Wearside, however, then Colwill is certainly a player Sunderland could run the rule over.
At 23, Colwill still fits the bill of Sunderland's recruitment policy and would likely benefit from playing in a more expansive, attack-minded side, where a starting berth could be available in the event that one of either Jobe Bellingham or Chris Rigg - or both, for that matter - move on elsewhere, with the prodigious duo having been at the forefront of speculation over the last year amid reported interest from a clutch of leading domestic and continental outfits.
Last but not least, a somewhat-ambitious swoop for Colwill would be very much in line with Wrexham's punchy, aggressive but undeniably effective recruitment drive of recent times.
Phil Parkinson's side will be competing in the Championship next season after achieving promotion from League One alongside fellow big-spenders Birmingham City, and they too will be expected to punch above their weight and pull off a host of exciting, high-profile captures in the summer.
Wrexham have both the financial muscle and pulling power to prize Colwill away from Cardiff, should the midfielder have his sights set on a return to the Championship.
In terms of where Colwill would fit, it is likely that the Red Dragons will be pursuing an attacking midfield upgrade on 30-year-old Elliott Lee, who scored eight goals in the 2024/25 third-tier campaign.
Wrexham, meanwhile, who will be looking to overtake Cardiff's bitter rivals Swansea City and establish themselves as the dominant force of domestic Welsh football, would surely relish the opportunity to bring a fully-fledged, nine-cap Wales international to the Stok Cae Ras.
The ambitious Welsh side have already been linked with a move for Cardiff's top scorer in 24/25, Callum Robinson, and a double-raid perhaps is not out of the question.
