Former Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappé has sparked controversy in France after Didier Deschamps left him out of the group for the UEFA Nations League matches against Israel and Belgium. Nonetheless, the 25-year-old has found himself in another controversy.

This week, the Real Madrid forward had been in a nightclub in Sweden on the night of his team’s UEFA Nations League win over Israel. Despite recovering from a thigh injury, which likely influenced his absence, it wasn’t the only reason.

Mbappé was included in PSG’s group for the match against Villarreal and even started the game before the international break. Despite the criticism of the captain of the French national team, Mbappé’s teammates are rallying to his defense.

Chelsea’s Wesley Fofana stepped up to defend Mbappé, noting that players are free to do whatever they want in their free time and that this reporting doesn’t affect the locker room dynamics nor how they view the captain.

“People can do what they want with their free time,” Chelsea defender Fofana told a news conference Saturday (h/t ESPN). “It isn’t something we [the France squad] have talked about today, I hadn’t heard about this story.

“He does what he wants; he is a great guy and a great professional. Are we making too much of it? I don’t know. He’s the best French player, so it’s normal that it is very publicised. I think that from time to time [the media] go a little too far. You should ask Kylian Mbappé for more information.”
