Chelsea vs Newcastle: Contrasting form

There are contrasting formlines for this showdown in West London and Chelsea will be eyeing the win.

The Blues suffered their first Premier League reverse since the opening weekend as they went down 2-1 to Liverpool at Anfield last weekend. However, Enzo Maresca’s reserve battalion ensured they left that behind with a comfortable Conference League win over Panathinaikos in Greece on Thursday.

Chelsea’s only domestic losses have come by the hands of champions Manchester City and Liverpool, the league leaders entering this latest round of games.

Newcastle, by comparison, are having a wobbly time of it, with Eddie Howe’s troops failing to win any of their four most recent games in the league.

The Magpies haven’t even troubled the scorekeeper in their last two and have scored just eight goals in eight Premier League outings. Their hosts, meanwhile, entered gameweek nine behind only champions City and free-spirited Tottenham in the goalscoring charts.

The Magpies will also flock south with major trepidation in regards to their record at this venue.

Newcastle haven’t won here since 2012, losing 11 of the subsequent 13 head-to-heads in 90 minutes and another via a penalty shootout in the EFL Cup last December.

They have lost seven of those 11 without scoring and on two of the occasions in which they have found the net, they still managed to lose by more than a one-goal margin.

In short, this is not a happy hunting ground for the Geordies and they’ve looked short on ideas, failing to score against Everton and Brighton recently.

Chelsea came off second-best at Anfield a week ago, but Maresca was still moved to hail the performance as more than satisfactory and a sure sign that his fledgling Blues side are moving in the right direction.

Chelsea vs Newcastle team news

Maresca made sweeping changes in Greece on Thursday evening as a largely second-string Chelsea side cruised to a 4-1 win over Panathinaikos with Joao Felix (2), Mykhailo Mudryk and Christopher Nkunku on target.

The Blues boss will revert to his preferred XI now. Talisman Cole Palmer has been spared even being part of the Conference League squad for the league phase, but has six Premier League goals already and will be restored here. He is likely to be flanked by Jadon Sancho and Noni Madueke, while Nicolas Jackson scored at Anfield and should lead the line.

Skipper Reece James was back last week as well, a major boost, and should make his second league start of the season.

Howe and Newcastle aren’t being helped by injuries at the moment.

Defensive stalwarts Kieren Trippier and Jamaal Lascelles are set to miss out again, along with Sven Botman, while Callum Wilson has yet to feature this season up front but is closing in on a return.

Alexander Isak had missed three on the trot but did manage 90 minutes in last week’s home loss to Brighton.
