Newcastle United lost 2-1 against Brighton & Hove Albion in an incident-packed FA Cup tie on Sunday at St James’ Park.

Danny Welbeck scored an extra-time winner for Brighton, while the Magpies forward Anthony Gordon was shown a straight red card in the 83rd minute for pushing Jan Paul van Hecke in the head.

Newcastle took the lead in the 22nd minute through Alexander Isak when he scored from the spot. It was a terrific penalty, and Clinton Morrison was so impressed by the striker that he said it reminded him of a Geordie legend, Alan Shearer.

“Oh my word, he just whips that into the top corner,” said Morrison on Sky Sports.

“That’s the best centre-forward in the Premier League at the moment.”

Isak, 25, has been in tremendous form this season for the Magpies, and along with Erling Haaland, he is arguably one of the best centre-forwards in the league.

Eddie Howe, however, will be worried about Isak’s fitness, as he was forced off towards the end with a suspected hamstring injury.

The Magpies talisman missed the Premier League clash against Liverpool last month with an ankle issue, and he is now a major doubt for the Carabao Cup final against the Reds at Wembley.

Isak has scored 22 goals for Newcastle in all competitions this season.

Howe will hope that the striker can shake off the injury ahead of the huge cup final. Callum Wilson is likely to replace him if he fails to recover in time.

Meanwhile, Gordon will now serve a three-match suspension, which means he will miss the Carabao Cup final against the Reds.

Newcastle could appeal the decision, but it looks like Gordon will miss Premier League clashes with West Ham United and Brentford and the Carabao Cup final.
