Portsmouth are back in the Championship after over a decade outside the second division of English football.

Pompey last competed at this level in 2012, when they suffered a second relegation in three years with a 22nd place finish.

John Mousinho guided the team back by winning the League One title in their seventh season in the third tier.

Michael Eisner purchased the club when they earned promotion from League Two in 2017, but it took several years to finally reach the Championship again.

Eisner and Mousinho will both be hoping that the club can survive this season, with a long-term view towards gaining their place back in the Premier League someday soon.

Portsmouth ownership demand made

When asked what one demand he’d have of Eisner’s ownership, FLW’s Portsmouth fan pundit Miltos Ioannidis claimed that he wants to see a continuation of investment into the club.

He believes that Pompey should not rest on their laurels if they can establish themselves in the Championship, and that further investment will be needed to match their Premier League ambition.

“To keep being competitive,” Ioannidis told Football League World.

“The gap between League One and the Championship, and in a future time, the Championship and the Premier League, is pretty big.

“And although we’ve made some nice investments over the summer, we need more of them, we need a continuity of those investments.

“We need to invest throughout the entire club, and not just in transfers.

“We need to invest in more everything, in order to be able to compete against the better sides, especially if we wish to keep climbing up the divisions.

“So, yeah, I just think being competitive.

“Just never letting it down and thinking ‘okay, we’re good now, we’ve spent some money on players or the training ground, everything is going to be alright,’ we need to continue being competitive.”

Portsmouth league position

Portsmouth’s return to the Championship hasn’t quite gone to plan so far, with the team currently sitting in the relegation zone.

Mousinho’s side have yet to win from any of their opening nine league games, with five draws and four losses on their record.

The gap to safety is still just three points at this early stage of the campaign, but the team will still be eager to earn their first win in the Championship since 2012 sooner rather than later.

Next up for Portsmouth is a trip to face 22nd place QPR on 19 October.

Portsmouth are quickly learning the competitiveness of the Championship

Ipswich’s rise from League One to the Premier League last season showed that the gap from the third and second divisions can be bridged quickly with the right investment.

But Portsmouth are learning this season that it’s not a guarantee of success either, with the team struggling for results.

Some of their performances have been solid, but they’ve lacked that cutting edge to convert draws into victories.

If they don’t win soon, then they’ll have to turn their immediate attention towards survival, which will surely require January investment into the first team.
