Daniele Chiffi has come under fire for his “doubtful” refereeing in yesterday’s Serie A draw between Inter Milan and Lazio.
Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, argue that the official got it wrong on a number of incidents.
There were plenty of refereeing talking points in yesterday’s match between Inter Milan and Lazio.
And in fairness to the officiating team, there was little wrong with any of the major second half episodes.
Lazio’s first equalizer was initially flagged for an offside in the buildup. However, VAR eventually confirmed that Matias Vecino had been onside before assisting Pedro, with Alessandro Bastoni playing him on.
Then, referee Daniele Chiffi failed to spot a clear handball by Nerazzurri defender Yann Bisseck in the area. However, VAR advised Chiffi to have a second look at it.
Lastly, there was little doubt that Marko Arnautovic was in an offside position when he stuck the ball in the back of the net for what would have been a dramatic late winner.

However, the Gazzetta argue, the doubts remain about Chiffi’s handling of the match as a whole.
The referee never seemed in control of the match. He aggravated both sets of players by whistling what seemed like non-existent fouls, or failing to spot clear infringements.
There was a confusing and harsh booking for Inter midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu.
Most consequentially, there was a big penalty appeal in the first half from Inter defender Yann Bisseck.
Bisseck made a charging run into the Lazio penalty area. He got the wrong side of Biancocelesti midfielder Nicolo Rovella.
The German had control of the ball and looked to be shaping to either shoot or play in a teammate.
However, Rovella made a very clumsy push on Bisseck.
Chiffi waved the incident away. However, in the view of the Gazzetta, it looked like a penalty, and the official should have had the authority to point to the spot.
