Tottenham defender Kevin Danso believes winning the Europa League will only help the club in the long term.

Spurs ended a 17-year trophy drought after Brennan Johnson’s first half goal secured Ange Postecoglou’s side the title with a 1-0 win over Manchester United.

It has been a Premier League season to forget for the Lilywhites, who languish in 17th place coming into the final gameweek, but this Europa League win is a well deserved reward for the north Londoners will have been plagued by injuries and bad luck throughout the campaign.

Danso, who arrived at the club in January from French side RC Lens, says winning a trophy will only benefit the club in the long term.

“Very historic, we can all be proud of what we’ve achieved this season,” Danso said. “I think everybody knows how difficult a season it’s been for us, loads of injuries, in the league we’ve not done what we expected to do.

“But winning this trophy just caps it off. We put everything into it and it’s an amazing feeling to win this trophy and bring a trophy back to north London.

“This is an experience, we all learnt a lot from this game about just how important this is and how much we need to invest to win a final. It means the world and it’s definitely going to help us in the future.”

Danso also praised head coach Postecoglou, whose job has been under the microscope after the disastrous league form, and credits the Australian for guiding his side to victory.

“We’ve had a very difficult season, a lot of injuries, it’s not always been easy for us, but he’s always believed in us, he’s always motivating us before every game, to do our best and take this opportunity.

“He always said we’d do something special, we believed, we listened to him, and I think the reward was what happened today.”
