Liverpool star Mohamed Salah has this week launched a stern defence of teammate and close friend Trent Alexander-Arnold.
This of course comes amid the ongoing backlash against the England international on the part of the Liverpool faithful.
Alexander-Arnold recently made public his decision to depart Anfield in the summer, upon the expiration of his contract terms.
The 26-year-old, in turn, is expected to be unveiled as a Real Madrid player any day now.
Despite having spent 20 years at the club, and having helped Liverpool to a Premier League title in his final year with the Reds, though, Alexander-Arnold has been labelled public enemy no.1 by large sections of the club’s supporters.
This comes amid anger over the manner of his departure, leaving no transfer fee for his services.
As alluded to above, though, late this week, Alexander-Arnold has been defended by another of the more high-profile members of Arne Slot’s squad.
Speaking during an interview with Gary Neville on Sky Sports (as cited by Diario AS), Mohamed Salah was drawn on the reaction to his teammate’s call to seek out a new challenge.
And wide-man Salah made use of the opportunity to firmly back TAA, explaining:
“I told Trent not to look me in the eye when he says goodbye, because I love him so much.
“He deserves the best possible farewell from the club . He’s done a lot for the city and the club. He was probably the best homegrown player in the club’s history, and now he wants a new challenge. That’s his decision. He’s 26 years old and has won the league twice. What more could he have done? He needs a change and another challenge. People don’t realize it, but he’s been at the club for 20 years. Mentally, it’s difficult to be at a club for 20 years. It’s the place you love, yes, but having to go to the same place every day can affect you. I wish him the best. The fans have been tough on him, but he doesn’t deserve it because he’s given everything.”
