Everton host Liverpool on Wednesday in the rearranged Premier League fixture between both Merseyside rivals, and they will be desperate to pick up a famous victory in the last derby against the Anfield club at Goodison Park.

Toffees manager David Moyes wants to make a statement of intent by stopping the league leaders, and Duncan Ferguson believes there is a way Everton must set up to ensure they beat Liverpool, advising them against attempting to pass the Reds off the park.

“I fancy Everton to win,” Ferguson told the Telegraph.

“They can do it if they set the tempo, put them under pressure, get on top of them, get the fans involved and defend for their lives. One of the defenders will have to be man of the match, but then they can nick it. An inswinging corner on top of the keeper and a headed goal would do, wouldn’t it? There is nothing wrong with winning a game like that.

The Reds have lost just once in 23 league fixtures this term, winning 17 and drawing five, and they will fancy their chances of leaving Goodison Park with all three points despite the form of the hosts under Moyes.

The Scottish manager returned to Everton for a second stint last month and has helped them to three victories and a defeat in four Premier League games.

They won just three league games in 19 attempts before his arrival and are heading into the derby in fine form.

Whether that will be enough to stop clear favourites Liverpool from winning remains to be seen, but fans can expect a feisty clash when both clubs meet, and the result could have a huge say on the title and relegation races going forward this season.
