Chelsea will not replace Robert Sanchez this month, despite the numerous errors the goalkeeper has made, culminating in a horror show against Manchester City that saw the Spaniard give away a crucial goal by dithering on the edge of his box.
Why wouldn’t the Blues look to upgrade a player that is clearly struggling? The reasoning that has been the line from manager Enzo Maresca all this time has been simply that Sanchez is good enough, doesn’t make any more mistakes than other goalkeepers, and has saved points with his good performances too.
But the Athletic’s piece on the subject today points to another facet – Liam Twomey writes that Chelsea believe that their second and choice goalkeepers, Filip Jorgensen and Mike Penders are regarded as “having elite potential.”
The problem is that we don’t need elite potential, we need someone in goal, right now, who’s going to make a difference. We’re losing goals and points in most games we play at the moment thanks to bad goalkeeping, sometimes leading to bad defending and sometimes on its own.

As Twomey points out, it’s also very questionable whether Maresca actually agrees with that, certainly on the Jorgensen front. The Swede has played in the Conference League, and picked up two league appearances too. But Maresca has shown no real inclination to put him in full time, even as Sanchez struggles.
Certainly if he doesn’t get a chance on Monday night when we face West Ham, he’s never going to get a chance. We can’t say we’ve been overly impressed with the summer signing either. He’s not done much wrong, but considering he’s been facing mainly Conference League teams, that’s not too surprising.
