“Everyone’s favourite customer!” – Carragher mocks Chelsea spending and criticises lack of “real authority”

Jamie Carragher is on Friday Night Football duty this week, and as always he’s not held back in laying into Chelsea.

The Blues are 2-0 down against Brighton after 45 minutes, another poor display from the Blues. Forget the goals – both pretty poor defensively – there is just no control at all, no spark in attack and no confidence or belief anywhere in the team, from the rubbish goalkeepers to the injured strikers.

The defence is what Carragher focused on:

“Chelsea have good individual players but it doesn’t look like there is any real authority there in the back four,” the pundit said in commentary for Sky Sports.

We couldn’t agree more – we love Trevoh Chalobah and Levi Colwill but neither is yet an elite, commanding presence that leads the team and strikes fear into the heart of the opposition. Out wide, Marc Cucurella and Malo Gusto are suspect defensively, and not good enough in attack to compensate for it.

It’s the same issue in midfield – Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo are good players, but they really lack any authority in a game like this. Perhaps a third body is needed in the middle there to help them control the game? Whatever the solution, it needs to come soon, and it can’t be solved by buying players now.

When the other commentator quotes Brighton director of football Paul Barber in saying that the Blues are their “favourite customers,” Carragher stuck the oar in by saying “I think they’re everyone’s [favourite customers],” referencing how much cash we splash trying to buy success – pretty ineffectively at the moment.
