Speaking exclusively with FLW, Lee Hendrie has given his verdict on Oli McBurnie's future amid Swansea and Hull's interest.
Sky Sports pundit Lee Hendrie believes a move to Hull City would be a better fit for Las Palmas striker Oli McBurnie instead of a return to Swansea City this summer.
It has been reported by the BBC this week that the Welsh outfit are considering an approach to bring the 28-year-old back to the club that he left for Sheffield United in 2019.
However, journalist Alan Nixon has reported interest from the Tigers as well, as they look to improve their team after a disappointing 21st place finish in the Championship table this past season.
McBurnie has spent this season with Spanish La Liga side Las Palmas, but it has been confirmed that their relegation from La Liga has triggered a release clause that allows him to leave the club as a free agent this summer.
Hendrie wouldn’t be surprised if McBurnie ended up back at Swansea because he knows the club from his four years there prior to moving to Sheffield United in 2019.
However, he believes that the Hull project might be more enticing due to the ownership’s willingness to invest in the team, and their promotion ambitions.
“He’s been at Swansea, hasn’t he, and he knows what that football club is all about,” Hendrie exclusively told Football League World.
“So it wouldn’t surprise me if he ended up going there. It’s whether the terms he left on, whether he enjoyed being there, and the uncertainty at Hull City.
“I’ve talked about how unsettled that place is, they just don’t seem to have any stability.
“But, likewise with Swansea, I don’t think they’ve got massive budgets to throw at players and that’s why they find themselves in a situation where they can’t seem to put a real good run and a promotion push together.
“I think if anything, the Hull City one would probably stand out more because that’s the one thing I will say about them: they will try and attract players, and they will try and bring better players in. That’s going to give them an opportunity.
“Because the owner wants play-offs, and he wants promotion, so that might be a better fit for Oli McBurnie.
“Because I just think they will definitely invest and bring players in and their squad’s not too bad, at this moment in time.”
McBurnie has made over 30 appearances in La Liga this season, with Las Palmas doomed to finish 19th in the table.
McBurnie has proven he can compete in the Premier League, as well as La Liga, and has previously been quite prolific in the Championship.
He would be an excellent addition for either Swansea or Hull this summer given he would be arriving as a free agent.
Going back to the Swans could be enticing for the Scotland international, but it will depend on how amicably his exit to Sheffield United went in 2019.
The new owners at the Welsh club could also see a change in their level of investment, so now could be a great time to get involved with their project by jumping in at the beginning.
