Wrexham, Swansea City, Cardiff City and Newport County all play in the English system but entrance to the Welsh League Cup is a potential way for them to qualify for European competition.

The clubs argued that their participation in the cup could potentially generate £3m a year in additional revenue and that getting larger Welsh clubs into European competition could also improve Wales’s coefficient with UEFA.

UEFA had already given its approval and confirmed the winners of the Welsh League Cup would be granted a place in the qualifying rounds of the Europa Conference League.

Yet the EFL countered that by suggesting the four clubs' absence from the EFL Cup would damage the integrity of the competition.
