Fantasy Premier League: Five of the best players for BGW34

The FA Cup semi-finals are this weekend, which means in Fantasy Premier League, the blanks are here. With several of the league’s top teams missing in action, FPL managers everywhere will be left scrambling to field a starting XI.
I’m sure many of you will be reaching for the Free Hit chip like it’s a golden ticket out of FPL purgatory. Whether you’re activating yours or trying to navigate the chaos with transfers and crossed fingers, we’ve picked out five players who could help you survive the blanks and maybe even climb the ranks.
DEF – £4.1m – 1.9% owned
Ryan Sessegnon is quickly emerging as one of the best enablers for BGW34 and should be one of the first names on anyone’s Free Hit. Listed as a defender but playing out of position on the wing, he offers serious value at just £4.1m.
He racked up an impressive 11 points against Chelsea last week and has now returned in five of his last seven appearances since breaking into the starting XI. With a 1.54 xG in that stretch, the highest of any defender in the league, he’s not just a budget pick; he’s a genuine threat. Up next? A leaky Southampton side that looks tailor-made for more attacking returns.
DEF – £4.9m – 12.6% owned
Wolves have really turned a corner recently, winning five games in a row and playing their best football of the season, making Rayan Aït-Nouri a standout pick this week. He’s picked up 32 points across his last five games, the second most of any defender in that time.
I feel like a broken record talking about Leicester’s blunt attack, but they’re clearly the team you want to be targeting. They failed to score again last week, meaning they’ve found the net in just two of their last 13 games.
Aït-Nouri offers more than just clean sheet potential—he’s the most creative player in Wolves’ backline, with four goals and six assists this season. No other defender in the league can better his 10 goal contributions. Whilst his attacking prowess makes him the obvious choice in the Wolves’ defence, I wouldn’t deter you from a double-up on a Free Hit.
MID – £6m – 4.9% owned
Success this week, for many, could come down to picking the right Newcastle asset. I’m sure most people on a free hit will likely have two or three of them, but who’s the best pick? I’m riding with Harvey Barnes again.
He’s in red-hot form right now, playing with so much confidence. Newcastle have scored more goals than any other team over the last five gameweeks (15), and Barnes is a huge reason the attack has been clicking, scoring the most points of any player in FPL over that period.
I realise that with Anthony Gordon back and Jacob Murphy playing well on the other wing, the competition for minutes is high, but surely Barnes is undroppable right now. I’m expecting Eddie Howe to ride with the hot hand, and I think FPL managers should do the same.
FWD – £6.9m – 10% owned
Back in the starting XI and bang in form. Matheus Cunha has had his fair share of issues this season, but scoring goals has not been one of them. The Brazilian has scored 14 times, firmly establishing himself as Wolves’ talisman.
It’s the dream fixture for any attacker this week, playing against a Leicester side who have conceded the most goals of any team in the league away from home this season, shipping 39 of them in just 16 games.
Now seems like the right time to jump back on the Cunha hype train; he’s currently just 10% owned and has huge upside playing against a team that looks to have lost hope. I’d have a hard time backing against him to return this week, especially with the confidence flowing through this in-form Wolves side.
FWD – £5.5m – 6.4% owned
With João Pedro suspended, Danny Welbeck has now emerged as one of the most exciting picks for gameweek 34. He’ll be the focal point of Brighton’s attack and, crucially, will also be on penalty duties.
Brighton are an elite attacking side; they have the highest xG in the league over the last 10 games (19.83) and are coming up against a West Ham side that’s lost six in a row. In any other season, The Hammers could be in serious trouble, on 36 points with just five games to go. Luckily for them, the bottom three this year have been historically bad.
Welbeck has proven in the past to be a steady scorer, but this could be the best version of him we’ve ever seen, and he’ll be hungry to get back amongst the goals against a team that has conceded the fifth most in the league this season (54). All signs point towards a fruitful week for the former England striker.
