1) Borussia Dortmund 3-2 Inter Milan - 2019/20 Champions League group stage

Dortmund were handed an extremely tough group in the 2019/20 Champions League, with Barcelona, Inter and Slavia Prague for company. Yet they advanced to the knockout stages in second place behind the Spanish giants after some assured performances.

After losing their away game 2-0 against Inter, they desperately needed a win in Germany to help them overhaul their direct rivals. Things looked bleak when they fell 2-0 behind in the first half, with a near-miracle required in the second period. But that’s exactly what fans were treated to as the Black-Yellows stuck three past their guests – an Achraf Hakimi brace and a Julian Brandt strike sending the home stands into raptures.

The side would go on to lose against eventual finalists Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16, but few fans have forgotten the night they pulled off that stunning comeback against Inter.

2) Bayern Munich 2-0 Inter Milan - 2022/23 Champions League group stage

Bayern were handed their own proverbial group of death in the 2022/23 Champions League, with Inter, Barcelona and Viktoria Plzeň lying in wait. But Julian Nagelsmann’s side qualified for the round of 16 at a canter, winning all six matches to top the group.

That run included a comfortable 2-0 away win at the San Siro, courtesy of a Leroy Sané strike and an own-goal from Danilo D'Ambrosio. Back in Germany, Bayern won 2-0 again, with Benjamin Pavard and Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting on the scoresheet. The Bundeslga side would go on to reach the quarter-finals, where they were eliminated by eventual winners Manchester City.

3) Inter Milan 2-5 Schalke - 2010/11 Champions League quarter-finals

Schalke faced a daunting test in the 2010/11 Champions League quarter-finals after being drawn against reigning champions Inter, who had narrowly defeated Bayern in the previous season’s showpiece.

But a talented side featuring the likes of Raul and Julian Draxler - with Manuel Neuer between the sticks - turned in a sensational performance in the first leg at the San Siro. After a poor start, which saw Dejan Stanković score a stunning long-range volley to help Inter to a 2-1 lead at the break, the Royal Blues put four past their hosts in the second period to claim a memorable 5-2 victory. A 2-1 win back at the Veltins-Arena sealed a stunning 7-3 aggregate victory for Ralf Rangnick’s side.

4) Wolfsburg 3-1 Inter Milan - 2014/15 UEFA Europa League round of 16

Inter were favourites to advance to the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals in 2014/15 after being drawn against Wolfsburg. But a purring performance at home in the first leg saw the Wolves storm to a 3-1 lead thanks to goals from Naldo and Kevin De Bruyne.

They won again in Milan, with Daniel Calagiuiri and Nicklas Bendtner sealing a 2-1 win on the night to claim a 5-2 aggregate victory for Dieter Hecking’s side. Wolfsburg would go on to lose against Napoli in the quarter-finals.

5) Werder Bremen 3-0 Inter Milan - 2010/11 Champions Leaue group stage

Few Werder Bremen fans will fondly recall performances in the 2010/11 Champions League, given the club finished dead last beneath Tottenham Hotspur, Inter and Twente in the group stage. Deflating results included a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Inter – courtesy of a Samuel Eto’o hat-trick – on a night to forget at the San Siro.

There was one result to savour, however. In their final fixture, Bremen banked their only win – a 3-0 dismantling of Inter that served as revenge, given that it prevented the Italians from topping the group. Goals from Sebastian Prödl, Marko Arnautović and Claudio Pizarro gave fans something to savour in a campaign they’d have otherwise preferred to forget.
