Real Madrid’s primary defensive target for the upcoming summer transfer window is Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold as the club see it to be vital to sign a new starting quality right-back.

In the final six months of his contract at Anfield, the player is in the ideal situation for Real Madrid to pounce on. However, Los Blancos will be wary not to celebrate too quickly, especially after how the Alphonso Davies saga has gone.

As it stands, the Merengues reportedly have an agreement in place with the youngster, and they will look to make it a written one at the earliest.

Liverpool legend speaks out

Speaking to the media earlier today, Liverpool legend Glen Johnson gave his two cents on the defender’s transfer saga and the likely outcome of the same.

“I don’t think Liverpool believe they can hold on to Trent Alexander-Arnold. The more time passes, the more unlikely it seems,” he began on Liverpool’s chances of keeping the star.

Elaborating on the factors that the Reds do have in their favour in his future, he said,

“They have many things in their favour: they could win the Premier League and Trent is a boy from here. That said, let’s be realistic, all teams want to sign Trent for free. It’s hard to say that they are sure they’re going to tie him up.”

The Liverpool legend then spoke on how the player was likely to favour Real Madrid over his current employers even if both offered the exact same terms.

“If Real Madrid and Liverpool offered him exactly the same contract, we will have to see what the player wants.”

“Trent (Alexander-Arnold) is very professional. The possibility of signing for Madrid will be hanging over his head. Naturally, he wants to play for these giants and when they come to call him it will attract his attention,” he added.

Elaborating on the topic, Johnson admitted there was not much Liverpool could do to change his mind and that it was all the player’s decision at this point.

“Liverpool can’t do much to influence his decision that they have not already done. I don’t think captaincy has as much weight as before, now all the players are captains on the field.”

“It depends on how long he wants to stay and whether he wants to move forward in the next stage of his career,” he added.

The club legend also spoke on how it was difficult to say no to an offer from Real Madrid given the club’s stature.

“[It is] a difficult offer to reject. They are always in the conversation to be the best team in the world.”

Finally, he gave some advice to the young right-back on how he must ensure the managerial situation at the club is stable before making a switch.

“Trent (Alexander-Arnold) must know the situation of Real Madrid and know if Ancelotti stays or not. If Carlo Ancelotti is the driving force behind the signing of Trent, of course, his departure from Real Madrid would make a big difference.”

“What would happen if a new coach arrived who didn’t like it? You have to weigh everything,” he added.

Johnson concluded by stating that Trent would be a good fit in La Liga and that he would make a tangible difference in Real Madrid’s plans.

“Trent knows what he can bring to the team, the players he will have around him and the impact he can have. You can improve that team. La Liga will be good for him.”
