Former Scotland international Alan Rough has revealed that he would part ways with Rangers boss Philippe Clement at the end of the season but admits that the financial status of the club also comes into the equation.
After the defeat at the hands of Championship side Queen’s Park on Sunday, Rangers’ Scottish Cup campaign for the ongoing season came to an end.
With Celtic having a huge lead over them in the league table and already losing the Scottish League Cup final to their city rivals, the possibility of going trophyless this season looms over Rangers’ head.
A section of Rangers fans are unhappy with Clement, but the club want to change the policy of chopping and changing managers frequently.
However, Rough stated that in Rangers’ place, he would let Clement leave after the season but stressed that the financial side of the club will also play a huge part in that decision.
He pointed out that Rangers’ financial situation is so dire that they were reluctant to pay £400,000 to Dundee for Lyall Cameron, but believes that despite monetary issues the club hierarchy will have to make a decision if the fan unrest escalates in the coming days.
“I personally would just let him go at the end of the season”, Rough said on PLZ Soccer.
“I think, first of all, on the financial side, we don’t know what contract he is on or what the money is.
“They did not have the money to buy the boy from Dundee, which is £400,000, so that will come into the equation as well, but again for me it is all about the fans.
“I know there was a protest outside, but if it escalates to much, much more than that, then they will have to come to a decision.”
Rangers are set to face Hearts in the Scottish Premiership at the weekend and it remains to be seen whether Clement’s side will be able to return to winning ways in the upcoming game.
