Danny Rohl has addressed the rumours about him returning to Southampton, to replace the struggling Ivan Juric.
It seems like a broken record to say this, but Southampton are in complete turmoil. This current Saints team is one of the worst to ever play in the Premier League and they run the risk of setting that record. So, there is a lot of scrutiny on the owners and their decision-making.
Frankly, Southampton fans could be here all day listing all the wrong decisions made by Sport Republic, but the decision to bring in Ivan Juric is right at the top of the pile. In hindsight, hiring the Croatian coach was a decision made out of pure panic and last resort, giving in to mounting pressure to move on from Russell Martin.
Look, I was one of those respectfully campaigning for a change when Russell Martin struggled to adapt to the Premier League. However, I've ended up with egg on my face, much like many other fans who campaigned for the change. Still, the change needed to be made, it was just the wrong replacement decision by the board... Surprise surprise.
Now, Southampton could find themselves welcoming their fourth manager over the last 12 months, however, it is likely to be at the end of the season to avoid Juric's gardening leave. The main option in question is Danny Rohl, who has a history at Southampton.
Recently, Danny Rohl was asked by reporters about the links between him and other clubs (namely Southampton). To which, Rohl's response was understandably respectful to his current employer, Sheffield Wednesday.
In his own words (quoted by The Star), Rohl said: “I must say, all the rumours around and topics don’t influence me. That’s the main part. For me it’s about the next game, winning the next game with my group… After the last results where we didn’t win, our job is to bring us back. This is the main part, and where my energies are. It’s with Sheffield Wednesday, with my group, to do everything"
This is hardly surprising. We should take these comments with a pinch of salt, as nobody expected Rohl to come out and say he is focusing on those links to Southampton. This would be disrespectful to Sheffield Wednesday, who still have a shot at reaching the playoffs this season.
I'd be optimistic about welcoming Danny Rohl next season. Not only does he have Southampton experience as a coach, but Championship experience as a manager. These two facets cannot be overlooked.
