Freiburg vs Werder Bremen preview: Two teams in contrasting form face off

Freiburg’s form is kind of strange to look at.
On the one hand, they’re on a three-game win streak. Die Breisgau-Brasilianer have been elite defensively during this stretch, as they haven’t conceded a single goal. It’s a run of results that has vaulted them into the Champions League fight. They’re in 5th right now, and they’re only one point off 4th place RB Leipzig.
On the other hand, Freiburg haven’t been playing too well. All of their wins were by a single goal. They didn’t come against the toughest opponents either, as they beat Bochum, Heidenheim, and St Pauli. You can only beat who’s in front of you, of course, but you would expect them to pull away in one of those contests.
Their most recent match against St Pauli was the prime example of this phenomenon. The winning goal only came in the 88th minute, and it was thanks to a massive deflection. It was a lucky break, and those aren’t going to keep happening.
If Freiburg keep playing the way they have, the results will likely go against them sooner or later. Then again, they know that if they can improve their performances then they’re almost guaranteed to win on any day.
It’s unclear which version of Die Breisgau-Brasilianer will show up, but either way they’ll fancy their chances of picking up all three points once again.
Team newsDaniel-Kofi Kyereh, Manuel Gulde, Florent Muslija and Max Rosenfelder are all out for Freiburg, but Lukas Kübler is in line to return.
It’s been a tough year for Werder Bremen.
After ending 2024 in excellent spirits, they’ve failed to maintain those feelings following the restart. The Green-White have won just one of their last seven, and their past fixture felt like rock-bottom.
Despite taking an early lead and starting proceedings on the right foot, Bremen 3-1 lost at home to a struggling Hoffenheim outfit. They were simply outplayed on every part of the field. They didn’t defend as well at the back, they looked overrun in midfield, and they failed to create much of anything in the final third.
It was a rough showing. The team has not been able to adjust to injuries, with the absences of captain Marco Friedl and top-scorer Jens Stage really disrupting their style of play. Their replacements in the lineup aren’t at the same level, and it shows.
Werder needs a spark. They need something. They need a 20-minute period where everything starts working, where they can play freely and with confidence. That will be hard to do against an opponent as solid as Frieburg, but there is enough talent in the lineup to make that happen.
The European dream is still on, as they’re four points behind 8th place Borussia Monchengladbach. However, if Bremen don’t start winning soon, then they’ll be forced to settle for another midtable finish.
Team newsWerder’s injury report isn’t fully clear, but for now the likes of Keke Topp, Marco Friedl, and Milos Veljkovic could all potentially miss out.
