Ahead of the game between AC Milan and Lazio this evening, the club CEO Giorgio Fiurlani spoke to the media and conceded that the season has been a failure. He also took responsibility for the situation as ‘every decision passes through me’.
It has indeed been a very poor season for the Rossoneri, getting knocked out of the Champions League against Feyenoord and sacking Paulo Fonseca mid-season. And despite several signings in January, they have still managed to drop too many points.
Speaking to DAZN ahead of tonight’s game, as transcribed by MilanNews, Furlani conceded that the season has been subpar despite the Supercoppa Italiana win. While highlighting that they are all to blame, he took responsibility as the decisions pass through him.
Curva Sud will be empty, the mood is clear… How do you rate the season?
“At the start of the season, expectations were high, the premises were there. We haven’t done what we wanted to do so far. In all honesty, the rating is decidedly insufficient, despite the Supercoppa Italiana win. We have to look forward, we can’t go back. We have to close the season with honor, starting from tonight.”
Have you given yourselves an answer internally?
“When performances are so low, there isn’t just one factor to blame. The truth is that we are all a little guilty, I certainly include myself in the mix as all decisions pass through me. The disappointment that the fans have, we too, in the club and the team, have.”
How much truth is there to the sporting director rumours?
“As I said, we have to improve our sporting results a lot. If there are figures that we can bring to the club that will help us achieve the results we want to achieve, we will consider them. At this time, no decision has been made on this profile.”
Heavy atmosphere?
“We are all disappointed with the performances, but we are also united: only with unity can we get out of this situation. There is no Furlani-Ibrahimovic case, there is no case about the coach or his replacement… Now we are all focused on working hard, being tough and finishing the season in the best possible way.”
Most would argue that the Champions League train has left the station already, but either way tonight’s game is the last chance for Milan. It’s also important to remain in the Europa League race, which says a lot about the situation.
