Although the Blades have hit something of a stumbling block, with three consecutive defeats leaving them five points adrift of the automatic promotion spots, Brewster has enjoyed a strong second half of the season.

Repaying the faith shown in him by Chris Wilder, the 25-year-old has contributed three goals and two assists since the turn of the year - including a memorable derby-day winner against Sheffield Wednesday.

However, it’s fair to say he has yet to live up to the £23.5 million fee paid for him back in 2020, with the once-promising forward registering just nine goals in 112 appearances for United. This underwhelming return could work against him when it comes to securing a new contract, with his current deal at Bramall Lane set to expire this summer.

Beyond the hefty transfer fee, he has also represented a heavy outlay in wages, with his five-year contract far from inexpensive.

According to Capology's wage estimation system, Brewster’s initial contract at Sheffield United was worth £27,500 a week.

Over the course of a season, the young striker initially earned £1.43 million - a figure that remained unchanged until last season, when it reportedly saw a slight increase. For the past two campaigns, he has been earning £35,000 per week, taking his annual salary to approximately £1.83 million.

Within the current squad, that places him among the club’s highest permanent earners, alongside loanees Hamza Choudhury and Ben Brereton Diaz. For a player averaging less than one goal every 11 games, it’s a considerable wage - and one the Blades may look to reduce if fresh terms are put on the table.

In total, the former Liverpool striker has earned around £7.95 million in wages since arriving at Bramall Lane. Factoring in his transfer fee, this means he has cost the club over £30 million - and that’s before any bonuses or potential add-ons are included.

In hindsight, it’s been a poor piece of business for the Blades. However, should he play a pivotal role in their push for promotion, there may yet be a case for offering him a new deal.

Despite falling short of the promise he showed during his youth career, it’s clear that Chris Wilder still has great faith in Brewster’s ability to bounce back as his career progresses.

Up to now, he’s been hampered by injuries, a dip in form, and what appears to be a lack of confidence. However, recent performances suggest that tide is beginning to turn - and the Blades' head coach is keen to see his number seven remain at Bramall Lane.

Speaking about the expiring contracts of Jack Robinson, Anel Ahmedhozic and Brewster, the 57-year-old told The Star: "Would I like them all to re-sign, yes. One hundred percent. They've all been outstanding for us and have still got a part to play going forward.

"We have to be sensible with contract discussions; we have to do what’s right for us as a football club and Rhian has to do what’s right for himself.

"But I’d like to think with his reaction and how he’s been around the place and his attitude to everything, that he wants to stay here. He's not knocked on my door once and said he wants to leave."
