The historic Merseyside derby between Everton and Liverpool takes place at Goodison Park tonight for the final time.

Originally scheduled for December but postponed due to Storm Darragh, the rescheduled fixture could prove beneficial for Everton, with the Toffees hosting their city rivals under the floodlights rather than a Saturday lunchtime kick-off.

David Moyes’ return to the club has provided a much-needed lift, but Everton face a Liverpool side determined to strengthen their Premier League title charge. Arne Slot’s team sit six points clear of Arsenal at the top of the table, and a win would ensure they remain in control of the title race

This fixture has been tightly contested at Goodison over the years, with the teams each securing 41 victories in their 119 meetings at the ground. With tonight marking the final chapter of this historic derby before Everton move stadiums, both sides will be eager to leave their mark.

What the managers have said

David Moyes (Everton manager)

“They’ve always been difficult games. Liverpool have always been a tough opponent, but at Goodison, it always felt a lot easier because we had the support behind us and a fantastic crowd. I think this game will be no different.

“All we need is the support behind us – which they have been since I came back. They’ve been absolutely brilliant. We want to put on a spectacle at Goodison and hopefully a great game.”

Arne Slot (Liverpool manager)

“I think the fact it’s the final derby at Goodison is an extra reason why the atmosphere will probably be even better than all the occasions before.

“I haven’t been to one, but people tell me that at Goodison Park, as at Anfield, it’s always a fantastic atmosphere. Home supporters are there to support their team, and the away fans are loud as well. It’s probably going to be a fantastic atmosphere, and that’s never easy to play against.”
