Renato Veiga has joined Juventus on loan for the second half of the season, but there are now question marks surrounding his long term future at Stamford Bridge.

Veiga only joined Chelsea last summer from Swiss side FC Basel in a deal worth €14m and after just seven Premier League appearances he’s once again on the move.

The 21-year-old was primarily signed to provide cover for Marc Cucurella at left back, but Chelsea liked his versatility given he can also play at centre back and in midfield.

Does Veiga have a long term future at Chelsea?

Veiga has impressed in the handful of appearances he’s made for the Blues and he’s become a full Portugal international since making the switch to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea are looking to move a number of players on this month including the likes of Ben Chilwell and Carney Chukwuemeka, but Veiga wasn’t expected to be on of them.

It’s believed Veiga wanted to leave in order to play more regular minutes in his preferred centre back position, and obviously thinks he will get that chance at Juventus.

Borussia Dortmund and Marseille were both interested, but Veiga opted for the Italian giants, although what this means for his long term Chelsea future is unclear.

There’s no buy option in the loan deal, so Veiga will return to Chelsea for the Club World Cup, but transfer expert Graeme Bailey feels if he plays at Juventus he would be  surprised if he returned to Stamford Bridge.

“In terms of Veiga, I know Chelsea fans are saying it’s a shock. I must admit, if he plays any football in Turin, I’d be surprised if he comes back to Chelsea,” he told The Chelsea Chronicle.

“Let’s not beat around the bush, the player wanted to leave. The one hope Chelsea have got is that he becomes homesick for West London. Is that going to happen? I very much doubt it.

“They’re confident he’ll do well, and his value is only going to go up. But I don’t personally see a long-term future for Veiga at Chelsea.”
