‘If I’m being completely honest’: Rooney wants to see £60k-a-week PL ace at Utd, he goes against INEOS’ policy

Manchester United crashed out of the FA Cup following a penalty shootout defeat to Fulham last night.

Now, it’s Europa League or bust for Ruben Amorim if he is to claim silverware in his first season in the Old Trafford dugout – albeit not a full campaign. In doing so, the side would seal a trophy for a third successive season.

Goals from Calvin Bassey and Bruno Fernandes in the 90 minutes saw the tie go to extra-time and subsequently penalties. Fulham scored four to United’s three, with Victor Lindelof and Joshua Zirkzee unable to beat the experienced Bernd Leno.

Throughout the 120 minutes of action, it was yet another dull affair all around from the hosts. Rasmus Hojlund extended his dismal streak without a goal, while the Cottagers dominated the match up until Fernandes’ equaliser in the 71st minute.

Alas, continued substandard showings from the Reds’ frontline prompted Wayne Rooney to call for the return of a former United striker. Speaking on BBC Sport’s coverage post-match, he told the panel: “Danny [Welbeck], he’s great to play alongside, and, if I’m being completely honest, I would probably still like to see him here playing for United.”

Welbeck, a Carrington graduate, spent six years with United after making his senior bow in 2008, completing loan spells with Preston North End (2010) and Sunderland (2010-2011) in that time. He has since represented Arsenal, Watford and now Brighton and Hove Albion.

Now 34 years old (therefore above the age range INEOS would target), the England international is still enjoying some truly prolific form in front of goal, scoring eight times and notching four assists in 25 appearances this term. Yesterday, he came off the bench in the Seagulls’ cup clash away to Newcastle United and bagged the winner in extra-time.
