Kelly Gago and Heather Payne scored their first goals for The Toffees as they recorded an impressive victory in the fourth round of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup.
When speaking to the media after the match, Sørensen said that he was pleased with how his side performed against a tough opponent in Spurs.
“It was nice to see that the stuff we’ve been working on was clicking,” Sørensen said. “I think we were by far the better team in 90 minutes. I’m very pleased with the performance and the changes we made; Karo [Olesen] came in who hasn’t played many minutes and was brilliant in that midfield, Emily [Ramsey] in goal too, it was nice to see.”
Sørensen has had a tough time leading the team with a takeover at Everton having rumbled on for months. That takeover was finally completed before Christmas and things are now looking up for The Toffees boss. With five January transfer window arrivals and players returning from long-term injuries, there is now a need for a regular run of games.
“With so many new players, we just need games to gel,” Sørensen explained. “It’s one thing in training but you can’t replicate the games, so we need some games under our belt to gel. It’s nice to see the girls are picking up what we want to do fast.”
Club captain Megan Finnigan was forced off with an injury just 10 minutes into the first half and Sørensen confirmed that it’s currently a waiting game to see how she is.
He said “I don’t know [how she is], we will have to wait and see. Hopefully, it’s not bad but we will have to see.”
Midfielder Honoka Hayashi has been something of a magician in the Everton midfield since joining the club in the summer and Sørensen had plenty to say about his number six.
He said “Hono is wonderful. She still doesn’t speak the language, but she understands football and she understands the football language. She’s the sweetest girl to work with, so humble and always gives 200-percent. I can always rely on her, I can put her almost everywhere on the pitch. I’m really pleased with her, I think she was a key signing in the summer.”
Everton are back in action on Sunday when they play host to Leicester City at Walton Hall Park.
