Many members of Inter’s squad have not been available to coach Simone Inzaghi in training during the international break, due to call-ups from their national sides.

However, quite a few players have also stayed back.

And for Inzaghi, the coach has had the chance to work with most of the defensive players in the squad.

Two notable exceptions are Alessandro Bastoni and Federico Dimarco. The Italian international pair have been away with the Azzurri during the break.

However, Inzaghi has had all of Francesco Acerbi, Stefan de Vrij, Benjamin Pavard, Yann Bisseck, Matteo Darmian, and Carlos Augusto at his disposal.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Yann Sommer is also around after retiring from international duty.

And the availability of so many defenders has been fortuitous for Inzaghi.

Inter’s issues in the first couple months of this season haven’t really been in attack. Even if there is always room for improvement, the Nerazzurri have largely been prolific.

Rather, the problems have come in defense. Inter have been conceding too many goals and too many good chances.

Of course, this is not exclusively the fault of the defenders.

Inzaghi has always been quick to point out that the defensive breakdowns have also come about because of issues in midfield and the team’s structure as a whole.

But the slip-ups from the players at the back have proved costly at times.

Bisseck, for example, has had some switch-offs in and around his own penalty area that have led to goals.

The German certainly has shown that he can defend at an extremely high level with his performance against Manchester City in the Champions League. But in Serie A there have been moments of inattention.

The same has also been true of the much more experienced Benjamin Pavard.

The Frenchman has seemingly not yet been able to find his best form.

And beyond working with individual players to get their mental focus and reactions at their best, Inzaghi has simply worked on strengthening the cohesion in the back three.
