Simone Inzaghi and Antonio Conte represent a contrast in financial outlooks during their tenures as Inter Milan coach.

This is the view in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. They highlight how the Nerazzurri’s financial situation has improved under the current coach.

The story of Antonio Conte’s departure from Inter Milan is a widely known one.

The former Juventus and Chelsea coach had spent two seasons in charge of the Nerazzurri. But they were turbulent ones – as they often are with Conte.

Already in the summer of 2020 Conte had considered leaving Inter after just one season at the helm.

This would have been the result of the worsening financial situation at the club. Inter were among the clubs to suffer most at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, Conte did stick around for the 2020-21 campaign. And it was the right decision, as he guided Inter to the Serie A title.

But in 2021, the financial situation became too much for Antonio Conte. He saw the writing on the wall – that Inter would need to make painful sales of big name players – and stormed out.

It was Simone Inzaghi who Inter turned to to replace Conte.

The former Lazio coach arrived knowing full well the scale of the task that awaited him. He was under no illusions regarding the fact that Inter would be forced into big sales.

The Nerazzurri lost Achraf Hakimi and Romelu Lukaku in Inzaghi’s first summer in charge.

However, the team still retained a strong core of players. And Inzaghi has shaped that group into if anything an even more dominant force than they had been under Conte.

Along the way, Inter have made some shrewd business. They’ve signed players like Hakan Calhanoglu, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, and Marcus Thuram on free transfers.

And Inzaghi has made the most of these signings.

The Nerazzurri have won the Serie A title as well as five other pieces of domestic silverware under the 48-year-old’s stewardship. They have also reached the Champions League final.

And as Simone Inzaghi was keen to point out in a press conference yesterday, the financial situation has improved dramatically since his arrival.

When Conte left and Inzaghi came in, Inter faced losses of €245.6 million. In the last fiscal year, the Nerazzurri recorded losses of €35.7 million.

Inzaghi has managed to keep Inter at the top of the Italian game while these improvements have taken place.

In the meantime, former Inter coach Conte has taken over at Napoli. The Partenopei have marked themselves out as the biggest threat to Inter’s title this season.

This evening, the two coaches and teams take on in a match that could be decisive for the title.
