Is Jordan Morris Already a Legend? The Seattle Sounders Striker Ties the Club’s Scoring Record

One day, you’re just another player trying to make a name for yourself. The next, your name is etched in the history books. Jordan Morris knows exactly how that feels. With his two goals in the 2-2 draw against Charlotte FC, he reached 86 goals for the Seattle Sounders, tying Raúl Ruidíaz at the top of the club’s all-time scoring list. It's a massive milestone for any striker.
But hold up... does this mean we can already call Morris a legend? Or are we getting a bit ahead of ourselves? The numbers are cold and hard, goals scored, nets shaken, stats updated. But history? Now, that’s a whole different beast. And if there’s one thing the MLS teaches us, it’s that being a great goal scorer doesn’t automatically make you immortal.
Jordan Morris isn’t just any guy. He’s Seattle born and raised, came up through the club’s youth system, and felt the highs and lows of being a fan of the Sounders before ever putting on that professional kit. If there’s a perfect symbol for that dream of the “hometown kid who becomes a hero,” it’s him. And let’s not kid ourselves, that counts for a lot when we’re talking about his career.
But is being loved by the fans and scoring goals enough to make him the greatest icon in Sounders history? If we’re being honest, the answer’s still “not yet.”
Everyone knows Jordan Morris is a goal machine. He’s been a key player in championships, scored decisive goals, and silenced opponents when it mattered most. But when we think of immortal players, the ones who really rise above the numbers, there’s always that one moment that stands out.
Take Ruidíaz, for instance, his goal in the 2019 MLS Cup final. That strike against Toronto FC, the one that sent the Sounders toward lifting the trophy in front of nearly 70,000 fans at Lumen Field, is what true greatness looks like. That’s history right there.
So, what’s Morris’ moment? What’s that one goal every Sounders fan would remember when talking to their buddies about the impact this guy’s had? Right now, that answer isn’t crystal clear. He’s had some stellar seasons, no doubt, but he still needs that definitive moment to truly become a legend.
Morris has already shown us that 2024 was just the warm-up. He banged in 18 goals last season, just one shy of the club’s all-time single-season record. And now, he’s kicked off 2025 like a man on fire, bagging two goals in the season opener, including the one that put him at the top of the all-time scoring list.
If he keeps up this pace and stacks up more game-changing goals, it’ll be hard to argue against his greatness. Especially with the Sounders chasing silverware on multiple fronts this year, MLS, Concacaf Champions Cup, FIFA Club World Cup... a big international trophy would be the perfect crown for his legacy.
Head coach Brian Schmetzer has already said Morris will break the record and stand alone as the club’s all-time top scorer. That’s practically a done deal. But for it to really mean something in the history of the Seattle Sounders, Morris has to shine when it matters most.
One thing that separates the good players from the truly legendary ones is consistency. Anyone can have one standout season, but staying at the top for years and years? That’s a whole other level.
Morris isn’t just a flash in the pan who had a good year or two. He’s battled through serious injuries, faced his share of ups and downs, and still remained a cornerstone of the attack. When a player is remembered as a key figure for almost a decade, they’re automatically in the conversation with the greats. Now, he just needs one last thing: a definitive stamp on a major title.
But if he wants to be remembered alongside icons like Ruidíaz or Clint Dempsey, he needs that cherry on top, a memorable goal in a final, a moment that seals his greatness forever. And if there’s any year for that to happen, it’s 2025. Whether it’s in the Concacaf Champions Cup or MLS, Jordan Morris has everything he needs to go from a historic goal scorer to a true, immortal legend.
