Inter and Italy legend Alessandro Altobelli feels Simone Inzaghi must ‘solve’ the Nerazzurri physical issues as soon as possible: ‘I’ve never seen Inter look this bad.’
The Nerazzurri lost 3-0 to Fiorentina on Thursday in the continuation of a Serie A game interrupted in December after Edoardo Bove’s collapse on the pitch.
This means the Nerazzurri remain three points below leaders Napoli, with the same number of games played and an upcoming meeting with the Partenopei at the Stadio Maradona next month.
“Since Simone has been on the bench, I’ve never seen Inter look this bad, this far behind,” Altobelli told Gazzetta via FcInternews.
“They lacked everything: mentally, tactically, and physically.”
The former striker, a 1982 World Cup winner with Italy, has clear ideas regarding Inter’s central issue.
“The physical condition because the drop in form didn’t just appear out of nowhere in Florence,” he said.
“I had already noticed in the derby that Inzaghi’s players were always late to the ball compared to Milan’s. It can happen. Inter have played man games and a packed schedule has an impact, but this is a key moment in the season. They need to push through and find the energy to avoid losing ground.
“Inzaghi protected the team by shifting the spotlight onto himself, but I think the blame should be shared,” continued Altobelli.
“The coach certainly has his responsibilities, but his top players were unrecognizable, from Calhanoglu to Barella, from Thuram to Mkhitaryan.
“In certain matches, the best players must play, there’s no debate about that. But right now, those best players are not in great shape. That’s a problem Inzaghi must solve quickly because Napoli are on the rise.”
Altobelli made 466 Inter appearances, scoring 209 goals, becoming the second-best scorer in the club’s history. During his stay at the Stadio Meazza, he won one Serie A title and two Coppa Italia.
