Italian club Roma has shown surprise interest in Southampton defender Jan Bednarek. But any agreement appears remote considering Roma's poor £8m offer for the Saints captain.

Tell me, how many players would continue at a relegation-battling club, even when being urged a better move? An honest answer would be unimaginably rare.

Thankfully, despite not-so-boastful achievements, Southampton feels rich to have some such names.

Undoubtedly, among them, Southampton Captain Jan Bednarek's name comes first.

Since 2017, Bednarek has been an integral part of Southampton's defense. Yet, what makes him special has been his unwavering commitment to Southampton through whatsoever difficult times.

Recently, after Jack Stephens' injury, Bednarek stood as the clear choice for the Captain's armband straightaway. Clearly, his more than 7 years of service have made him untouchable under manager Ivan Juric.

Understandably, any transfer move for Bednarek wouldn't come easy for potential suitors.

Interestingly, the Italian club Roma has started a surprise operation for Jan Bednarek in the last lap of the deadline day. Recently, journalist Craig Hope confirmed the rumor, saying: "Southampton centre-back Jan Bednarek a surprise target for AS Roma"

But, like we all saw coming, Bednarek is to continue at the Saints. Craig's post further read: "Saints aware of interest & £8m fee mooted, but deal not close as it stands"

Certainly, such a meager fee for Bednarek is an issue, but a straightaway refusal also has to do with boss Ivan Juric's past.

To note, Juric was in the managerial role at Roma before Southampton last year. However, after a disappointing two-month spell, the 49-year-old was forced to discontinue.

Further, Jan Bednarek's relationship with Ivan Juric is well known. Having been a pivotal part of the manager's setup, the duo has linked perfectly at Southampton. To the extent that Bednarek backed boss Juric during the club's miserable phase days ago.

For now, it's crystal clear. A deal with Roma stands off until the club is willing to match Southampton's valuation for Jan Bednarek.
