Manchester City fans have received a very clear instruction from Jack Grealish ahead of their UEFA Champions League showdown with Club Brugge next week.
The Premier League champions will welcome the Belgian side to the Etihad Stadium on the final matchday of the league phase in the competition, knowing that only a win will secure them a place in the play-offs for the last-16.
That fate was subjected to the club after they threw away yet another lead across competitions on Wednesday night, losing 4-2 at the Parc des Princes to Paris Saint-Germain, despite moving 0-2 ahead within 10 minutes of the second-half restart.
Goals from Jack Grealish and Erling Haaland gave Manchester City plenty of hope that their second-half resurgence in the season would be set to continue, only for Ousmane Dembele and Bradley Barcola to respond and get the hosts deservedly back level.
Joao Neves and Goncalo Ramos would then put the hosts level and secure the three points respectively in the moments that remained in the match, as a slow, timid, and tiring Manchester City performance culminated in a total collapse towards the end of the match.
Speaking to broadcasters after City’s crushing 4-2 defeat to PSG on Wednesday night, goalscorer Jack Grealish was keen to ensure that the club’s supporters were aware of their own responsibilities to get the team over the line and into a last-16 play-off place next week.
“We’re going to need the Etihad (Stadium) rocking like it is on Champions League nights, and hopefully we can go and get the win (against Club Brugge),” Grealish told club media at the Parc des Princes.
“Next week is like a final, we have to win,” he continued. “Since I’ve been here, there’s been so many moments where people have questioned us as a team, and we’ve always come up. Hopefully we can do that next week.”
Before then, City return to Premier League action in another mammoth contest for the club and their hopes of securing a place in the UEFA Champions League next season, as Chelsea visit the Etihad Stadium on Saturday evening.
The London outfit sit just two points above the reigning Premier League champions, and a victory for Pep Guardiola’s side would be a significant statement of intent when it comes to their ambitions of finishing in the top-four places in the top-flight.
