Jeremie Frimpong has signed a five-year deal with the reigning Premier League champions Liverpool, filling the right back vacancy left following Trent Alexander-Arnold’s departure.

The 24-year-old Dutch international decided to move away from Bayer Leverkusen, where he became an unbeaten Bundesliga winner in the 2023/24 season, to Merseyside.

Last campaign, he scored five times and assisted 12 in all competitions, meaning he has the attacking pedigree suited for Arne Slot’s squad when compared with his predecessor, Alexander-Arnold, who scored four times and assisted eight.

Frimpong said: “Liverpool came and said they had interest, and obviously for me it was a no-brainer. For me, it was like, whatever you guys [his agents] do, just get this done. It went quite smooth, there was no problems.”

He added: “To the Liverpool fans, I’m going to give my all, my energy, my work rate, and hopefully we can win together, we celebrate together, do everything together. I’m just excited to be here.”

He will replace a player who, over the last nine years, has embedded himself into the history of Liverpool Football Club and has helped them win two Premier League titles, a UEFA Champions League, an FA Cup, a UEFA Super Cup, and a FIFA Club World Cup.

Liverpool’s relationship with Alexander-Arnold will come to a premature end after Real Madrid have agreed an early £10 million deal so the English full-back can compete in the Club World Cup this summer, despite still having a month left on his contract which was set to expire on 30 June.

Frimpong will return to the United Kingdom after over four years abroad, where he left Celtic for Germany in January 2021. He’d previously played in the Manchester City youth academy alongside Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Eric García and Morgan Rogers before his move to Scotland.

The Reds will face Milan in a friendly on July 26th at the Kai Tak Sports Park in Hong Kong, where Frimpong will be able to show his quality on the field for the first time in a Liverpool shirt.
