Liverpool are reportedly ‘advancing in talks’ to sign Jeremie Frimpong in the summer transfer window.
The Reds are looking to sign a replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold after the England international revealed he would be leaving the club at the end of this season.
The 26-year-old is expected to sign for Real Madrid on a free transfer, leaving Conor Bradley as the only natural right-back in the senior squad.
Frimpong has evidently been identified as the man to fill the gap and provide more depth in the position ahead of next season after it was first reported last week that contacts had been made.
Liverpool have ‘approached’ Bayer Leverkusen to ‘discuss’ the payment structure of the player’s €35 million (£29m) release clause with negotiations ‘advancing’, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The transfer expert claims that talks are also taking place on the player side, with Frimpong ‘keen’ on joining Arne Slot’s side.
That corroborates reporting from Sky Sport Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, who claimed on Monday that Liverpool are ‘seriously’ pursuing the Netherlands international.
Plettenberg reported that Frimpong is ‘planning’ on a summer move and his release clause is set somewhere between €35-40m.
Frimpong’s agent, Jeffrey Lemmert, posted a cryptic message on his Instagram story, which simply said “we working”, on Monday.
The 24-year-old came through the academy at Manchester City, meaning he would be registered as homegrown player if he were to join a Premier League club.
It’s set to be a rough summer for Leverkusen, whose manager Xabi Alonso has already confirmed his impending departure while star central defender Jonathan Tah is expected to join Bayern Munich.
