John Terry explains why he thinks Chelsea have had a “drop off” this season | OneFootball

Chelsea legend John Terry doesn’t do a huge amount of media stuff, but he was caught out on a golf course  this week and asked to give his thoughts on this current season and he obliged.

He agrees with the rest of us that getting into the Champions League is the bare minimum requirement for this team this year and going forward, despite their youth making things a little tricky this time.

“Champions League, still a possibility? Who knows. We’ve showed signs this year of being a really young squad I think. And I say that in terms of performances where you see a really good spell, then we’ve come off of it lately,” the former central defender said.

“It was always going to be one of those seasons for me, even when we started well I thought we’d have a little bit of a drop off and we have done that. Listen, Champions League has to be the minimum every year for me. When you’re playing at a top club like Chelsea the mentality has to be Champions League football year after year. ”

Damn right. In fact, when Terry was captain, aiming for the Champions League places would have been aiming low. We used to mock Arsenal fans for their “fourth place trophy.”

It’s a sign of how standards have gradually slipped over the years that we’re now in that position. But the only way is up, and we have to learn to walk before we can run. Getting into the top 4 this season after not managing it last season is a modicum of improvement – but really we want to be back where we were in Terry’s time at the club.
