With his contract at Manchester United expiring this summer, Christian Eriksen has been touted to return to Ajax by former Danish internationals Brian Laudrup and Martin Jørgensen. Speaking with sports magazine Tipsbladet, the pair believe it is the best choice for the 33-year-old midfielder.
Last summer, the Dane was regularly linked to a return to Ajax. While this ultimately fell through, Eriksen indicated that he was open to it. Speaking during the international period with Denmark, he remarked: “I do not rule anything out at all.” Fellow former Ajax player Laudrup would like to see his compatriot return to Amsterdam.
“Christian seems like someone who needs a certain security and wants to have his family close to him. I don’t see him going to an exotic destination, but I do see him going to Ajax.
“It’s the place where he built his name and he can still make a difference in the Eredivisie, where he gets the ball more often and there is more space. I can see that happening, but the question is of course what his ambitions are.”
Eriksen played for Ajax between 2009 and 2013, before leaving for the Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur. Making his Eredivisie debut against NAC Breda at just 17 years old in 2010, the Danish string-puller went on to win three national titles, one KNVB Cup and one Johan Cruyff Shield.
Getting back in touch with that previous success, Martin Jørgensen is another who believes in Eriksen’s return.
“He grew up there in a way. So it will feel a bit like coming home for him. That’s where the circle has to be completed and not so much at OB (the club of his youth).
“It’s difficult to say what he wants, but I don’t see Christian moving to the US with his family anytime soon to play football there for a year or two.”
