Lazio would have loved to extend their positive run by beating Udinese on Monday and reclaim their 4th place in the Serie A table, but the heavy absences took their toll on the team, they ended up settling for a draw. But prior to that contest, they had secured back-to-back victories over AC Milan and Viktoria Plzen thanks to 98th-minute winners.
The dramatic 2-1 win in the Czech Republic means the Biancocelesti have made a significant step towards the Europa League quarter-final. They only have to avoid a defeat in front of their home supporters to prevail on aggregate. And while their recent domestic form at home has been mediocre, they still boast an almost flawless record in Europe this season.
Similar to Lazio, Viktoria Plzen registered a draw in the weekend, playing out a stalemate with Pardubice away from home. This result leaves them third in the Czech top-flight, but Miroslav Koubek’s men know that the Europa League is their ultimate ticket to fame, and knocking out the best side in the group-stage would be an astonishing feat.
Plzen were surprisingly the better side during the second half of the first leg, albeit they failed to capitalise on their numerical advantage in the final minutes. So it remains to be seen if they can replicate this courageous display on Italian soil to make this one interesting.
