Recently, Steven Davis spoke about his glorious Southampton career at length. Simultaneously, Davis also confessed about his only regret at the club which was missing out on the Carabao Cup accolade.
On paper, Big Six clubs are considered as the silverware frontrunners in English football. While that's frequently true, those teams aren't immune against startling defeats and occasional Premier League fumbles.
Currently, no team would agree more to this argument than Newcastle United.
After all, they have tasted the ecstasy of becoming the ones to outclass a heavyweight rival, let alone the distinguished Premier League favorites. Now, there have been many such instances of unhindered courage and Southampton also came close to coming in this list.
Further, that game isn't a distant memory and one only needs to revisit eight years back in time to relive that nostalgia.
Yes, we are talking about the 2017 Carabao Cup final where Manchester United stood in the way of the Saints. Although Southampton competed end-to-end with the Red Devils, the former had to leave Wembley empty handed due to a narrow 3-2 defeat.
To this day, that cup run remains a cherished recollection among the St. Mary's faithful. Notably, that evening also provokes a bittersweet thought about having a different outcome of the match.
If you also think this way, you're absolutely not alone. Even Southampton's legendary midfielder Steven Davis also holds a similar impression of the fixture.
Lamenting that slipped trophy opportunity, Davis was quoted by the Daily Echo: "If we had have won it, it would definitely have been the ultimate memory from the time at the club, but unfortunately we didn't."
Though nothing can be done by over analysing that final but Davis' ideas show the ambitious approach prevalent in that squad. Wish, that same determination could be evident in the current roster as well.
