Brighton (4-4-2): Verbruggen; Veltman, Van Hecke, Julio, Estupinan; Kadioglu, Baleba, Ayari, Mitoma; Welbeck, Rutter

This immediate rematch will take place at Anfield, scheduled for 3pm.

Liverpool are flying high in the league following a fine start to the campaign which has seen them lose just once in nine matches, and they trail leaders Manchester City by just a point.

Brighton have also made good progress and they started this round of matches in sixth spot, six points behind the Reds following four wins from their opening nine fixtures.

Reds boss Arne Slot rested most of his key men for the cup clash on Wednesday, while Fabian Hurzeler also made plenty of changes to his side with a view to this contest on Merseyside this weekend.

Another lively encounter expected at Anfield

Liverpool were more comfortable than the 3-2 scoreline suggested on Wednesday, with Slot’s rotated lineup still causing the Seagulls plenty of problems.

And back at full strength this weekend, it is hard to see anything other than another three points for Liverpool, who drew 2-2 away to Arsenal last weekend.

Only Nottingham Forest have got the better of the Reds in all competitions this season with Liverpool beating Manchester United, AC Milan, Bologna, Chelsea and RB Leipzig along the way.

The transition to Slot from the Jurgen Klopp days has been a smooth one and the 2020 Premier League champions look a more solid unit these days.

Brighton haven’t won at Anfield since 2021 but meetings between these two are often lively.

Seven of the last eight match-ups have featured over 2.5 goals and both teams have scored in six of those fixtures.

The Seagulls will look to put the Reds under pressure but Slot’s side look a different beast and their resilience was there for all to see when they came from behind twice to draw with Arsenal at the Emirates last Sunday.

Liverpool vs Brighton team news

Arne Slot rested most of his star names for the midweek trip to Brighton with Alexis Mac Allister, Mohamed Salah, Ibrahima Konate and Darwin Nunez coming off the bench to feature at the Amex Stadium later on.

They should all return to the starting lineup this weekend along with Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ryan Gravenberch, who all played no part of the EFL Cup contest.

Cody Gakpo will be pushing for a start following his two-goal salvo but Diogo Jota, Alisson and Ben Doak will miss out through injury.

Danny Welbeck, Joel Veltman, Pervis Estupinan, Kaoru Mitoma and Carlos Baleba are set to be recalled after substitute appearances on Wednesday, while Joao Pedro and Matt O’Reilly could return after long-term injuries.

Evan Ferguson will be assessed after playing a full 90 minutes at the Amex despite his recent return from a serious injury and Simon Adingra will also be monitored along with Ferguson. Lewis Dunk misses out with a calf injury.
