The winter transfer window has closed, and Alexander Isak remains at Newcastle United—for now. While there wasn’t much speculation about a move this winter, plenty of clubs will likely keep an eye on him heading into the summer.
Plenty of clubs are being linked to Isak in the transfer rumor mill, but Manchester United is one team being urged to make a move. There’s no doubt he could help solve many of the Red Devils’ problems at the No. 9 spot.
RMC Sport’s Daniel Riolo recently urged Paris Saint-Germain, who have been linked to the Newcastle standout, per Fichajes, to make a strong push for him as they look to strengthen their attack under Luis Enrique.
“Wouldn’t you go all-in on Alexander Isak if you were PSG?” Riolo said. “PSG could very well go all-in. Can we swap Ramos and Kolo Muani for Isak? Can we make a package like that? You also add Asensio to the package. And come on, I’ll throw in Kang-In Lee too.”
Arsenal have shown some interest, but according to FootballTransfers, Liverpool are currently the frontrunners and the most determined to sign him.
Former Manchester United striker Teddy Sheringham believes Isak would be the ideal solution to the club’s goalscoring problems, but he’s unsure if a deal will happen.
“The problems all started two years ago when they didn’t make a bid for Harry Kane, the best available centre-forward, the leader of football, and a professional at the top of his game,” Sheringham said (h/t TEAMtalk).
“That’s what Manchester United used to do. They’ve set their stall out since then and said, ‘look, we’re not going for top players.’ They weren’t in for Declan Rice, who would have run the midfield. He’s going for £100m. That’s what Man United used to do: they broke the bank and got the top players in.
“So, you’re asking me now, two years later, when it should have been dealt with two years ago. Is Harry Kane the right man now? Probably not. I know he’s still scoring goals for Bayern Munich, but I don’t know if it would have the same impression on everybody if they were to get him now.
“United need to start going for younger guns, but I mean, who’s out there? Would Isak come away from Newcastle to go to Man United at the moment?
“You’d like to think he would, being a Man United fan, but I’m not so sure he would, so the further they fall down the pecking order, the less chance they’ve got of signing top players.”
Former Man United and Sunderland chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Newcastle want £150 million to begin any negotiations for their top talent.
“So Newcastle are going to do whatever they can to keep him at the club,” Brown said. “They’re demanding £150 million to start negotiations, and that’s what it is, but I can’t see them letting him go. It might depend on him, because if he’s got the idea in his mind that he’s going to go somewhere like Arsenal, then it could be taken out of their hands.”
