Chelsea’s goalkeeper situation has been a rolling disaster for a few years now.

Since the moment that Edouard Mendy suddenly went off the boil, it’s just got worse and worse.

After being dropped mid-way through last season, Robert Sanchez was given a second chance this year, but has been dropped again after more terrible errors.

But Filip Jorgensen, the man who replaced him, was not that convincing to begin with, and tonight he made a horrible error to give Aston Villa a win.

Asked about the situation after the game, manager Enzo Maresca was forced to defend Jorgensen in much the same way that he defended Sanchez for such a long time before eventually giving up and dropping him:

“The keeper position is a delicate one. The striker can miss the goal and sometimes it doesn’t look so important but when the keeper makes a mistake, it’s always clear. We need to support each other, stay strong and work hard. In two days, we have one more game at home and hopefully we can finally win in front of our fans.

Pressed for more information, the lack of a convincing “yes” is probably the most damning statement of all:

“I don’t know at this moment” was the only response Maresca could give when asked directly if Jorgensen would be starting the Southampton game on Tuesday night.

That’s not an ideal situation, let’s face it.

Defenders can’t be blamed for this mistake

Of course we’ve said many times that having a really solid defence with some commanding centre-backs would help anyone who is playing in goal for Chelsea. But this error today was nothing to do with defenders, just a young (and possibly just not very good) goalkeeper letting a shot slip under his body.
