A fresh timeframe has surfaced surrounding the opening of Manchester City’s expansion and redevelopment project at the Etihad Stadium.
Manchester City first had their eye-catching plans for new fan, entertainment and leisure facilities, as well as an expanded North Stand, approved by Manchester City Council’s planning committee back in July 2023.
Following on from the expansion of the Etihad Stadium’s South Stand, the Premier League champions moved to develop their North Stand into one larger, single upper tier above the existing lower tier, taking the overall capacity of the arena to over 60,000.
Manchester City currently believe that should all go to plan, the expanded North Stand within the Etihad Stadium should be open and operational from the start of 2026 for the second-half of next season, in light of test events.
Other amenities will likely follow for Manchester City’s supporters, with a stadium roof walk experience, covered fan zone for around 3,000 people, a new and expanded club shop, museum and a Raddison Group Hotel all part of the plans.
Now, according to a new report from the Manchester Evening News’ Joe Bray, a more specific open date has been released as City hope to unveil their 6,000-seat expansion in January 2026, starting with various test events, before the hotel, fan zone and museum open later in the year.
Now, a video uploaded by YouTube channel SS Skies has shown how the first roof trusses have been installed ahead of Saturday’s Premier League visit of Brighton & Hove Albion, with first roof beams put into place on Wednesday this week.
It is further indicated that the roof of the third tier is being installed over the existing Etihad Stadium roof, with temporary supports holding the new structure up. That will then mean that the existing roof will be removed, with the new, higher roof connected to the other stands.
Following on from the announcement earlier this month that Manchester City had partnered with Radisson Hotel Group to unveil The Medlock hotel, the same video reveals that cladding is now being added to the building behind the expanded Etihad Stadium stand.
For now, Manchester City’s focus will no doubt remain on the pitch as the club continues a substantial battle for European football next season having endured yet another succumbing of a challenging result in Premier League football.
Having fallen to a 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest last time out, Pep Guardiola and his players return to action against Brighton & Hove Albion, giving away the lead on two occasions to draw 2-2 at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
