Marco Silva has reportedly landed on Manchester United’s radar, with Ruben Amorim yet to make up his mind over his future.
INEOS left many surprised by showing Erik ten Hag the exit door on Monday instead of waiting for the November international break to make a change at the helm.
United also revealed that assistant coach Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the Red Devils on an interim basis. However, it appears the club’s hierarchy is keen to put a new permanent manager in place as soon as possible.
Late on Monday, it emerged that United are going all out to secure the services of Amorim, having already begun talks with Sporting CP to finalise a deal to bring him to the Theatre of Dreams.
It was also reported that the sought-after head coach, who has led Sporting to two Primeira Liga titles, is open to replacing Ten Hag.
However, journalist Guillem Balague has raised the possibility of a new twist in United’s search for a new manager.
Balague reports that Amorim “might decide to wait” for Manchester City “if Pep leaves.” Still, United continue to push for the 39-year-old.
City’s appointment of Sporting’s director of football Hugo Viana as Txiki Begiristain’s successor has further intensified rumours linking Amorim to the Etihad outfit.
Viana brought the young Portuguese tactician to Sporting from Braga in 2020 despite his very limited top-flight experience.
Balague adds that Silva has also been approached by United. The 47-year-old is currently impressing with Fulham, who sit 10th in the Premier League table.
Despite losing key players like Aleksandar Mitrović and João Palhinha in recent transfer windows, Fulham continue to deliver promising performances and results under Silva.
Interestingly, akin to his fellow countryman Amorim, Silva has also held the reins at Sporting. He was the side’s manager for the 2014-15 campaign and won a domestic trophy.
