Manchester United and Atletico Madrid have reportedly reached an agreement over the transfer of Alejandro Garnacho this summer.

Garnacho has been linked with an exit from Old Trafford amid reservations over his suitability to Ruben Amorim’s side and the need for sales to fund a rebuild.

In January, the Red Devils were reportedly ready to consider bids for Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo, whose status as high-value academy products would boost PSR numbers.

Atletico Madrid are ready to offer Garnacho a return to the Spanish capital. The Argentina international was born in Madrid and spent five years in the Atletico academy before joining Manchester United in 2020.

According to Fichajes, Diego Simeone wants to sign Garnacho to play from the left, in a supporting role to Julian Alvarez at the Metropolitano. A fee of around €50m (£42m) is being discussed for the 20-year-old, who has scored 23 goals in 128 first-team appearances for United.

Atletico could face competition for his services. Napoli expressed interest in a potential deal in January, as the Italians sought a replacement for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. Chelsea are also admirers of the Argentine.

Garnacho was criticised after heading straight down the tunnel following his substitution against Ipswich last month. Following the incident, Ruben Amorim said the winger apologised – in addition to a small punishment.

“Yeah, he came to me,” Amorim said.

“It was funny, the next day he came to my office. I did some investigation and he went to the dressing room [during Wednesday’s game] to change his clothes because he was wet.

“He watched the game in a different [place], not on the bench, and at the end of the game he went home so there’s not an issue there. But I told him that in Manchester United, everything is important and perception in every club is really important.

“So, he is going to pay a dinner to all the team and that is it.”
