Manchester United’s decision to pull the trigger and sack Erik ten Hag was reportedly a joint decision by club chiefs.

Moments ago, United officially confirmed that Ten Hag has left his role as club manager. The Dutchman’s final game was Sunday’s 2-1 defeat at the hands of West Ham.

The result left United in 14th position in the Premier League table, seven points above the relegation zone and with a minus-three goal difference.

Moreover, United are 21st of 36 teams in the Europa League table, having drawn their three opening fixtures.

A club statement explained that Ruud van Nistelrooy, who arrived in the summer in a coaching capacity, has taken over as interim manager.

Journalist Ben Jacobs has given more information on the issue, indicating that the decision was not made by one single individual.

According to Jacobs (via X), “Understand it was a collective and unanimous decision to sack Erik ten Hag.”

“Manchester United wanted to give Ten Hag the chance to work in the new sporting structure, but there is an acceptance results and performances haven’t been good enough prompting a mid-season change.”

“Ruud van Nistelrooy is a short-term appointment while the search for a permanent head coach continues. Van Nistelrooy has met with, and impressed, Manchester United’s leadership team on multiple occasions.”

“A caretaker role was always likely if a mid-season change was made.”

Sam C – a relatively reliable source when it comes to United news – reveals, “Understand that United wanted to only sack Ten Hag when they had a replacement lined up, but ultimately enough is enough.”

“Club sources confirmed to me that Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team in the “short term” while United make a permanent appointment.”

United return to action on Wednesday when they face Leicester City in the Carabao Cup.
