Enzo Maresca was asked last night about the worrying trend of his team dropping off in the second half of games, and he admitted it was something that is “not normal” and that he and his staff needed to find the root of.
Asked for more detail, he mentioned a couple of things which may have played into it:
“I am always concerned and I am always worried, even when we win. For sure, every game is different. Tonight after the goal and after we conceded the penalty, we changed and we dropped a little bit and those are the moments where you have to show even more your personality and your character because you have conceded,” the coach said.
“The game was 100% under control and we need to understand why we dropped after the penalty but I am worried always, but I am more worried when you don’t create and we don’t play well. When you create, probably, hopefully, we can be more lucky in the future.”
Enzo Maresca forms a surrender cobra.
Personality and character are exactly what the team needed, and it’s without doubt one of the real flaws in this impressive group of youths. The most experienced players aren’t the best, and the best aren’t very experienced.
Among those who have both – Enzo Fernandez, for example, there’s perhaps a lack of character.
It’s something that we’ve said all along is going to be an issue with playing a team with so much youth, and is something that could easily be addressed in the transfer market with a clever signing or two. The model is to buy young and sell on for a profit, and you can’t do that when you buy an older head. But it could be the difference between the Champions League and missing out for this team.
