Inter President Beppe Marotta confirms they will offer Simone Inzaghi a new contract this summer, regardless of whether they win the Scudetto tonight. ‘It is our duty to believe.’

The trip to Como kicks off at the Stadio Sinigaglia at 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT, 20.45 CET).

There is a one-point gap at the top of the table going into this final round, so the Nerazzurri know they can only get a result here and hope Napoli slip up.

The only scenario where a play-off would be forced is if Inter draw and Napoli simultaneously lose at home to Cagliari, in which case that match would be played on Monday.

“It is our duty to believe. These are professional players, it is an important match, and even though the destiny is not in our hands, we must still give our best performance,” Marotta told DAZN.

Inter were angry over the refereeing and VAR decisions following last week’s 2-2 draw with Lazio, where none of the players or coach Inzaghi spoke to the reporters. Do they feel aggrieved or penalised by the officiating?

“I don’t want to get into this, especially going into the final day of the season. I think silence is a method of communication too, it has to be motivated and explained by others. We considered this to be the right course of action, not as a lack of respect, but because there was a lot of tension and it was the best way to deal with that situation.”

Inter have other issues to take into consideration, as they will face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League Final next Saturday in Munich, so several big players are rested this evening.

“Serie A is a tournament like the Giro d’Italia, whereas the Champions League is more of a collection of various fixtures where one moment can change everything. We played I think at least 15 more matches than Napoli this season, which inevitably is going to have an effect,” added Marotta.

There are reports in L’Equipe today that Saudi Pro League clubs have offered up to €50m in wages to tempt Inzaghi away from Inter, so are they working to lock him down to a new contract?

“The contract still has a year to run anyway, but what counts is not the formality of the paperwork. We have a great symbiotic relationship with Inzaghi, he is the primary architect of this extraordinary run of seasons and we want to continue with him. I don’t see signs that he thinks anything different,” added Marotta.

“After the Champions League Final, there is also the Club World Cup, but we will find time to sit down and discuss our proposal of a new contract.”
