Franco Baresi has revealed that Juventus tried to sign him when AC Milan were in Serie B, but he never had any thoughts of leaving the club of his heart.

Baresi has written his second book in three years and he had half an hour of conversation with journalists in which he spoke about a number of different topics. La Gazzetta dello Sport relayed some of his quotes, starting with one about Francesco Camarda’s call-up.

“I am happy that Camarda has an opportunity. He should be left alone, he is a Milan boy, a boy from the youth team. The oratories are still there today, perhaps it is football that offers fewer opportunities, there are fewer Italians who play.”

The former Milan captain spoke little about the present moment and a lot about his years at the club, which saw him win a number of major trophies and be part of some of the most iconic sides in football history.

“Sacchi’s Milan was young, curious and unscrupulous. Capello’s Milan was mature, conscious and authoritarian,” he said. Then he went on to anecdotes, from character to character: “Maradona was great. We beat him, but he never complained. I still have several of his shirts at home.

“I miss Berlusconi, we had a strong bond, he was very attentive to the human aspect. In general, in my life in football, I felt loved.”

Among the pages of the past, here are two particular moments, one known and one much less so. An offer from Juventus came in, perhaps the team closest to tempting him.

“In the early 80s there was an offer from Juve when I was in Serie B but there were no agents, I belonged to Milan, I never thought about it. I thought I would be able to win, as happened. Then I had offers at the end of my career.”

A meeting with a special man: “The meeting with John Paul II was a great emotion, he had a crazy aura. He sent me his best wishes before the wedding.” Finally, a room for a joke when asked about coaches who might have scolded him “And how could they scold me? I made them all win!”

At an event last night, Baresi insisted that the current head coach Paulo Fonseca must be brave and put his stamp on the team, while he spoke in greater detail during an interview for Sportweek over the weekend.
